The diocese of South Florida divided into Central, Southeast and Southwest Florida in 1969. There were two Suffragan bishops for South Florida from 1961, Bp Duncan and Bp Hargrave. +Duncan was elected bishop of the new Southeast Florida, and +Hargrave elected bishop of the new Southwest Florida, areas they had already been assigned to serve as suffragans. Bp Louttit of the mother diocese retired, and Bp. Folwell was elected for Central Florida. Bp Louttit oversaw the constitutional conventions of all three new dioceses in 1969, and then stayed in office in Central Florida until +Folwell was actually consecrated and took office in 1970.
