Circa 1940, 8 to 9 years after being elected bishop of Harrisburg, Bp Brown, being fully in favor of a Just War response against Hitler, made a legal name change in order to curtail threats from Nazi sympathizers living in Pennsylvania. He hyphenized his first and last name, and made his given middle name as his new first name. He continued to be know, however, by those who knew him, as Bishop Brown. As he was consecrated with the name Brown, not Wyatt-Brown, it is proper to list him as such, with notation. See this historical and biographical address by Bertram Wyatt-Brown for the story.
